Full Description

In 1994 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation. A series of terraces was found following the contour of the hill slope. One terrace was tentatively identified as a hut platform as there were associated gullies and concentrations of flint that suggest knapping was occurring in the location. Samples of the loam filling the terrace produced a large volume of fresh struck flint and sherds of pottery, mostly of Early Iron Age date. Some material was of earlier date, including two possible Beaker sherds, and there were some Late Iron Age sherds. It is thought that the terraces represent the surviving traces of a field system on the steep slope of the hill, perhaps in use from the Neolithic or Bronze Age until the early Roman period. (1)
