Monument record TR 36 NE 640 - Iron Age four post structure, 56 Dumpton Park Drive, Broadstairs

Summary

A post hole associated with Iron Age pottery was revealed during an archaeological evaluation of a site at 56 Dumpton Drive in Broadstairs. A later stage of strip map and sample excavation revealed further post holes at the site, though no further dating evidence was located. These post holes likely relate to an Iron Age four post structure and possible fence lines. This fits in with the archaeology in the immediate vicinity of the site which indicates Iron Age occupation. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

In 2010 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation. A post hole containing Iron Age pottery was found. (1)

A subsequent excavation by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology exposed nine separate post holes. Two structural groups were identified, a square four post structure and three aligned post holes representing a fence line. The remaining two isolated post holes, located between the structural groups, may have been associated with either structure or could be from a different phase of occupation. The size and depth of the posts that make up the features, despite considerable truncation from later ploughing, indicate that the structures were robust in comparison to some of the shallower less regular linear structures that are often found in association. The commonest accepted interpretation for such features is that they represent a form of raised granary, where threshed grain was stored in a container raised on posts. presumably capped with a flat disc or stone slab, to prevent rodents climbing up the post and into the grain container. The storage of threshed grain would imply that the features would be in immediate association with settlement. where grain needed to be ready to be used to grind into ilour each day and where the valuable resource could be monitored and collected. Overall this fits in with the archaeology discovered in the vicinity. Three sites in the immediate area have produced evidence for settlement of the landscape in the Iron Age with permanent post built structures and settlement features. (2)
