Full Description

A hearth or fired clay surface was discovered during a watching brief that was carried out on the groundworks for the construction of a new dwelling at 31-33 High Street, Minster In 2011 by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology. It was encountered in the western footings, measuring 1m long and up to 0.35m wide, the surface was exposed under a 0.40m thick plough soil horizon. No artefacts were associated with this feature but it may represent late Saxon or early Medieval occupation. Three circular features were also seen during the groundworks, on was associated with a sherd of Saxon pottery though this is likley residual. The sherd was identified as early to mid-Saxon organic tempered ware, dating from c. 575-675AD. (information summarised from source)
