Full Description

A 19th century coach house, associated with the present Broadacre Hotel formerly 'The Gables'. The building consists of a typical integral equestrian facility associated with a small-medium nineteenth-century rural town house. Clearly constructed during a period of rising prosperity in the Walker family, former owners of 'The Gables', it incorporates all the necessities required by a local dignitary to possess and maintain a couple of horses and at least one carriage or cart on the ground floor with adequate storage above. Though there is no evidence of accommodation for a horseman or a stable boy within the present structure, heating was provided in a central tack-room via a small fireplace to give some relief to those occupied in maintaining the horses and the equipment. Whilst some idea as to the arrangement of the first floor plan can be made as to the general function and layout of the building, very little of its features or fixings survived to be more precise. It would be impractical for the entire first floor to be utilized just for general storage as buildings of this nature would require a hay/straw and horse food loft at the least. Its subdivision into three unequal rooms clearly indicates a separation of function, but unfortunatelythese remain unknown. (1) (information summarised from source)
