Full Description
In 2001 a metal detectorist found two copper alloy vessels in Nine Nails field, near St Nicholas at Wade. One vessel was a wine bucket and the other a dish, placed inverted over the bucket as a lid. The bucket contained cremated human remains. The bucket had been sealed with fabric drawn over the opening prior to the 'lid' being placed over the top. It was probably buried around the first quarter of the 2nd century AD.
The dish is c.256mm across the rim, c.230mm across the base and 49mm high. It is plain and has no sign of any attachments now missing. The bucket is c.284mm high, 205mm across the rim and 180mm across the base. It was less well preserved than the dish. There were six shallow decorative lines incised around the wall of the bucket. It originally had attachments just below the rim for a handle. (1)
