In 2009 Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated the Marlowe Theatre site. Two phases of medieval riverside revetment and two buildings jutting into the river were found. The first phase of revetment was built using reused timbers from buildings dating to the late 11th or early 12th century. The second phase was built with timber seemingly felled for the project in 1142. Two buildings also dated to this phase of medieval riverside development, jutting out into the river. (1)
