Full Description
In 2004 contractors broke through into a deep air raid shelter. Kent Underground Research Group carried out a survey. The shelter was chalk cut and consisted of a single passage with entrances at either end. The main passage measured 1.3m in width and 1.8-2m in depth. Wooden cross beams supported the roof which was covered with corrugated iron sheets to prevent from minor chalk falls. Some of the material supporting the roof had been reused from an earlier surface building. No graffiti was found. The shelter was probably dug in 1940. (1)
