Three phases of field evaluation were undertaken at the former Empire Sports Ground, Knockhall Road: firstly in March 2012 by ASE (1, 2), secondly in Feb 2013 by WA (3), and thirdly in Jan 2017 by WA (4). The first two phases of work identified a sparse presence of Palaeolithic flakes (a) in the fluvial terrace gravels at the higher western side of the site and (b) in slopewash deposits descending to the lower eastern part of the site. However the third phase of work identified a palaeo-landsurface with two handaxes and several pieces of debitage concentrated in a small area, in TP 10. All the artefacts were in mint condition, and one of the handaxes was a twisted ovate.
