Full Description
The former site of the medieval manor of Quekes or Quex. The manor is recorded from the middle of the 15th century, it was used by William III as a stopping point on journeys to Holland. The manor was gradually demolished over the course of the 18th century having fallen into disrepair. Mr Powell took down most of the building in 1789 when building a new house. (1)
The OS drawings of 1797 and 1801 show the house as Quakes (corrected on the map of 1801 to Quekes) as a building in grounds with other structures around the north and east sides. It is possible that Powell's late 18th century modifications entailed a reduction of the building, retaining a smaller inhabited portion into the early 19th century, prior to its complete demolition and the building of the current Quex House.
