Full Description
In 2011 Kent Archaeological Projects carried out a watching brief on a pipeline. Five sunken floored structures were found in one area, each containing furnaces for iron smelting. The site was a Late Iron Age iron smelting site with bloomery furnaces, iron ore roasting pits and large amounts of waste products. The furnaces had scorched the natural soils around them and had been backfilled with slag and charcoal after use. One furnace had an in situ slag deposit left after the iron bloom had been removed from the furnace. There were five phases of activity on the site. (1)
