Full Description
In 2009/10 Archaeology South-East carried out a strip, map and sample excavation. An early Roman inhumation cemetery was found overlying the corner of the Middle Iron Age enclosure. Five inhumations were found in two groups. They were tightly grouped and intercutting. The reason for this restricted use of the space is unclear; there may have been surface features that defined the area of activity that have not survived. Four skeletons were found, there was variable survival of the bones. The only dating material recovered from the burials was a sherd that dates to the Roman conquest period, although it could also be of slightly earlier date. As the graves cut the silted Middle Iron Age enclosure ditches, they are certainly Late Iron Age or early Roman in date. (1)
