In 1998 the Museum of London Archaeology Service carried out an evaluation. Mesolithic flints were found in later features. (1-2)

In 2000/1 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a targeted watching brief (a strip, map and sample excavation) ahead of CTRL works. The earliest occupation of the area was evidenced by Mesolithic material found in a tree throw. A large lithic assemblage was found. It appears that the tree throw was utilised as a disposal pit for flint working waste. A radiocarbon date (6020-5840 cal BC NZA-20049) on redeposited charcoal indicates an episode of burning (hearth or tree-clearance) of broadly contemporaneous date. (3-4)
