Full Description
In 2000/1 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a targeted watching brief (a strip, map and sample excavation) ahead of CTRL works. Truncated remains of an enclosure were found in the northern part of the site. The enclosure was sub-rectangular, 80m x 84m with a funnelled entrance on the south side. The ditches contained a few sherds of Late Iron Age pottery and slag. A slag block was also found. This type of slag was produced in a furnace with a pit below it, a type only previously identified on sites on the CTRL route. Pits and post holes within the enclosure could have belonged to the same phase of activity but were undated. (1-2)
