Full Description
In 2000/1 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a targeted watching brief (a strip, map and sample excavation) ahead of CTRL works. Two pits or ovens were found on the northern part of the site. They contained burnt material and pottery of the middle Roman period (AD 150-270). They could have been domestic ovens, possibly associated with occupation of the area, beyond the limits of excavation. One of the pits contained fragments of tegulae and brick. Similar material was found, along with a lava rotary quern, during subsoil stripping in the area. This suggests that a building may lie in the immediate vicinity. (1-2)
