Full Description
In 1999 subsidence was noted in the front garden of a property in Nelson Road, Gillingham [no further location information]. The subsidence was caused by a chalkwell type denehole chamber. The chamber was 5.1m long and 3.3m wide. It was probably nearly 3m deep. The original shaft is located under the pavement of Nelson Road. This type of small chalkmine was common in North Kent from the 17th century, to the end of the 19th century. No definitive dating evidence could be found although a mid 18th century/early 19th century date would be a reasonable estimate. (1)
