Monument record TR 06 SW 325 - Late Bronze Age to mid Iron Age settlement on the Davington Plateau, Faversham

Summary

Excavation designed to investigate a linear feature shown on a geo resistivity survey of Davington Cricket ground yielded large quantities of Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age pottery sherds and also abundant worked flints dateble to this period. Features were revealed that suggested a stockade lined hollow way, with the stockade of Early Iron Age date.

Full Description

A geo resistivity survey on the extensive site of the Davington Cricket Club revealed a number of interesting markings, the most conspicuous of which was a linear feature running in a broad curve from the north west to the south east of the flat topped plateau. Four excavations, the largest of which was OA86, yielded large quantities of worked flints, (including cores) waste flakes and, above all, heat stressed flints. These were mostly found as infill in a broad sunken trench, which corresponded to the linear feature on the resistivity survey. This sunken feature was probably a trackway dating to before early Iron Age times. Well preserved flint tools and cores dated from the Mesolithic right through to early Iron Age.

Also in the infill were large numbers of pottery sherds of varied type, much of it flint temprered. This was dated to the Early to Middle Iron Age, with very little dating to the later Iron Age.

OA86 also revealed a flint surface with a very large post hole, possibly once holding a stockade post. (1-3)
