Full Description

A megalithic arrangement on the highest point above Hurst Farm, Westerham. The stones are mapped from the mid-19th century and so are probably a folly of that date.

The area is shown on the Ordnance Survey drawings of 1798 as subdivided into small fields. No megalithic structure is shown. The Tithe map of c.1844 shows the area as one large field, recorded in the apportionment register as "part of Barmley Hurst Meadow and the Downs"; again, no megalithic structure is shown. The stones are first depicted, but no labelled, on the 1st edition 25" OS map of the c1860s. They appear on every subsequent edition, are labelled from the 3rd edition, and there is a singular stone to the northwest, c.70m distant. Given the lack of earlier cartographic depiction, no place name evidence (from the apportionment register) and the changes to the fields in the first half of the 19th century, it is likely that the stones are not a prehistoric megalith but actually a folly, perhaps associated with Hurst Farm.
