Full Description

In 2009 Birmingham Archaeology carried out a magnetometry survey of the neolithic causewayed enclosure at Burham as part of the Medway Valley Prehistoric Landscapes Project, commissioned by the Valley of Visions Landscape Partnership Scheme.

In addition to defining the extent and form of the causewayed enclosure the survey revealed a feature immediately outside the ditch on the south side of the monument. This consisted of a U-shaped enclosure c. 35m long and 16-18m wide. The feature was orientated north-west to south-east and the western end appeared to have been left open though the ends of the ditch angled inwards giving it a slightly horned appearance. There was nothing to suggest an internal mound in the survey.

The surveyors interpreted the feature as a long enclosure or oval barrow. It was noted that the shape was more indicative of the oval barrow which often have U-shaped ditches than a long enclosure which often have entrances on the long sides. The date was suggested as the mid-4th millennium BC.

The relationship with the causewayed enclosure was not certain but it was noted that causewayed enclosures are often found related to long or oval barrows, albeit rarely so directly. (1)
