Full Description

The 19th century directories had problem with numbering, alternating wth No 29 or No 19, The Tower, almost opposite No 29 The Plough, and both were near the causeway.

Apparently the first license for the Plough was in 1838 when EDWARD THURSTON was innkeeper, the address given was 29 Pound Lane, adjoining St Peters Lane. In 1846 and 1855 the landlord was William Knott but in 1862 an application by Mr Knott was refused and a new license was issued to William Todd. In 1867 the Inkeeper William Todd was also named as a 'marine store dealer' and James Ditton was innkeeper in 1878.

In 1882 the inn was rebuilt and renamed the WHEATSHEAF and several directory entries numbered the WHEATSHEAF as No 19 Pound Lane.

In 1905 the innkeeper of Wheatsheaf was John Newman. In 1900 the landlord was James Stevens and the inn closed in 1911. The building was a shop for a short time. It is now an imposing residence.
