Full Description

The Canterbury UAD states that the earliest reference to this inn found was a listing in a Directory of 1878 with Mrs Hulse as innkeeper. Bedwell's Directory for 1888-89 also listed it as Coach and Horses, 56 St. George's Street with E. Jell as licensee. It also appears in Kelly's Directories of 1931 and 1939 with F. W Bushell as landlord.

The pre-1942 Coach and Horses was on the corner of St. George's Street and St. George's Lane. And was a timber-framed building with rendering to front and with a first floor jetty and two oriel windows, one superimposed above the other. To the rear was an array of coach houses and stables set around a yard.

The inn was destroyed by enemy bombing during the blitz in 1942.

It was rebuilt on a new site next to Gravel Walk further to the west and opened again in December 1963 with Mr & Mrs Roy Melbourne as the first innkeepers of the new inn.

The plot position for both the early inn and its replacement further to the west next to Gravel Walk are both represented on the map. The modern inn was subsequently demolished in 2001 prior to the development of the Whitefriars complex.
