A Fremlins/Whitbread inn.

This inn was formerly the Black Swan and in 1795 the licensee was Moses Bayley.

The Black Swan was included on the Licensing List of 1692 and in the following year the Billeting List offered the inn 6 men. In 1780 the inn was mentioned as the Black Swan in a City Rent Book. In Rigden's Rent Book, Moses Bayley still was the innkeeper when he paid to Rigden's: One Years Rent £18.4.0.

Moses Bayley and Moses Bayley the Younger appear to have paid the same rent for the Jolly Sailor until 1830. In 1838 the innkeeper named in Stapleton's Directory was James Hughes.

The inn had been purchased by Rigdens in 1801 for £205. It appears that the Jolly Sailor was rebuilt and a cottage included in the building at a cost of £2001.
