Full Description
The Rose Hotel was originally established as an inn in 1660. It is mentioned in the Pattenden Diaries of 1799. Adjoining the inn to the rear with access via Rose Lane was a coachyard with stables and beyond that to the south-west was The Rose Tap, for coach drivers and less important cliental. Some time during the late nineteenth century the old inn was refronted, if not rebuilt.
In the Official Guide of 1908 it is listed as The Rose Hotel, with good stabling and noted as 'American's Favourite Hotel'. The Rose Hotel was severely bomb damaged by enemy action in 1942 and was subsequently demolished.
The site of the former Rose Hotel is now (2002) occupied by Burton Menswear and Dorothy Perkins (womenswear) shops.
