Full Description
The Rose Inn/Hotel situated at 15 The Parade was established in 1660. Sometime later, probably during the Mid-late eighteenth or early nineteenth century a large coach yard, stables and a Tap were added to the rear of The Rose Inn, with access via Rose Lane. The Rose tap was built to provide accommodation and facilities for the coach drivers and less important travellers and cliental, whilst the main inn was mainly patronised by the Aristocracy and more important guests.
The Rose Tap is shown to the rear of The Rose Hotel on the 1st edition O. S. maps of Canterbury c. 1873.
The Rose Hotel was improved sometime in the nineteenth century but the whole establishment and the Tap was subjected to severe bomb damage during enemy action in 1942 and was subsequently demolished. The site of the former Rose Tap is now occupied by the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society.
