Full Description
In 1865 there were five licensed houses in North Lane, three of which (see below) the exact location is not known. Enderby sources three inns in North Lane where their location remains unknown. The 1st Edition O.S. Map shows an inn, or public House at No. 8 North Lane and it is possible that any of the three inns of uncertain location listed by Enderby may relate. These are:
(1) The Royal Oak, North Lane: It is recorded in the Licensing List of 1692 and mentioned in the Holy Cross Accounts. The sign was often adopted after Charles II miraculous escape at Boscobel.
(2) The Dog Inn, North lane: It was an ancient inn and appears in the Holy Cross Churchwardens Accounts of 1678, the item is a problem, ' Spent at ye Dog selling ye goods at twice 2s. 6d'. A receipt is mentioned in 1725, 'Mr Fenner 1 ses for ye Dog'.
(3) The Butchers Arms, uncertain location, said to be near West Gate.
