Full Description
Little is currently known about this public house. A Public House is shown on the on 1st edition O. S. Map 1873 at approximately 48 Union Street, however its name is not given. The Kelly's Directory for 1931 lists the Union Castle Public House at 48 Union Street with Arthur Anderson as licensee. It is most probable that this is the public house on the OS map 1873.
It is still listed in Kelly's Directory of 1949-50 as the Union Castle P.H. with Mrs Ellen Armitage as licesee. During the late 1950's to 1960 much of the area was demolished, rebuilt in a different style including blocks of flats and all properties then in the street were renumbered. The Union castle fell fate to this programme of works and sometime between 1955-1960 it was closed and demolished, by the 1961 Kelly's Dirctory it is no longer listed nor is the address in existance.
