Full Description

The Canterbury UAD states that Pigot's Directory for 1828-29 lists Messrs T & P Flint's Brewers, Stour Street, Canterbury. Pigot's Directory of 1832-34 and of 1840 confirms this and lists a brewery in Stour Street owned by Thomas and Priscilla Flint.

Enderby states that opposite the Two Brewers Inn in Stour Street was a large brewery from which the inn obtained it name. In 1849, the brewery was sold to William, Edward and John Rigden. The brewery stood on a large corner plot on the south corner of Stour Street and Beercart Lane. The complex then became the Rigden & Co. Stour Street Brewery.

A large brewery complex is shown on the east side of Stour Street and the south side of Beer Cart Lane on the 1st Edition O. S. map of 1874. It is still listed in Steven's Directory for 1882 lists Rigden's Faversham Brewery, Beercart Lane. Pike's Local Blue Book for 1888-89 and Kelly's Directory for 1899-1900 list it as Rigden's Faversham Brewery; offices and stores, Beercart Lane.

The brewery closed down sometime between 1900 and 1930 and is no longer listed in Kelly's Directory for 1931, the complex was demolished in 1932, the site was then used as a yard.

Little else is known at present. The site has been redeveloped and now (2002) is occupied in part by residential dwellings of Temple Mews and offices of Kent County Council.
