Full Description
According to Enderby, the Orange Tree Inn was a low class house and frequently changed its keeper. The records from licences commences in 1792. From 1846 it changed its name to the Kentish Arms.
Innkeepers: 1792 William Gill; 1806 Sarah Gill widow; 1816 William Fryer (Friar); 1838 William Young; and 1846 George Hills.
Even under the new name the Kentish Arms, the innkeeper was soon in trouble, and in 1849 'Inspector Spratt reports that there is a Dance held at the Kentish arms, Jury lane, on Saturday nights which brings together a disorderly lot of Prostitutes, and a great number of young lads'. The inn was finally closed in 1875.
Innkeepers: 1847 Ann Roberts; 1848 William Simmonds; 1851 John Noble; 1862 Richard Daniels; 1867 Sarah Caroline Daniels. It is listed in Pigot's Directory for 1840 as the Orange Tree with George Boyle as innkeeper.
