Full Description
The Canterbury UAD states that The Temperance Hotel was established in 1874 at 31 St. George's Street by George Baker. It is listed in Steven's Directory for 1882 with George Baker still as proprietor. Pike's Local Blue Book for 1897-98 lists it but the proprietor by then was A. G. Baker.
An advertisement in a 1903 Guide describes it as Baker's Temperance Hotel, 'Quiet, Central and Homely, Bath Room, Electric Light, Commercial, Writing and Coffee Rooms - Alfred Baker proprietor', and appears the same in the Penny Guide for 1908.
It is listed in the Kelly's Directory of 1931 with Chas. Stilwell as proprietor.
The hotel premises at 31 St. George's Street must have closed sometimes afterwards and moved, as Kelly's Directory for 1939 lists Baker's Temperance Hotel Ltd, at 63 Ivy Lane. The old buildings then became Parade Chambers, accommodating offices etc., the building was destroyed by enemy bombing in World War II then the site was further destroyed when Rose Lane was widened in the 1950's.
