Full Description

The District of Staplegate (Stablegate), just within Northgate, contained the place of the old archipiscopal stables, which was separate from the main area of the Archbishop's Palace, on the other side of the road, accessed via Stable Gate. They are believed to date from at least the late 12th century and are clearly listed in a Rental Document dated 1206. Details are unsure, but it is possible that there were two long rectangular ranges of opposing stable blocks, possibly up to 90 feet long N-S by about 12 feet wide E-W. Later the new stabling was built within the Palace ground and the disused stables gradually seem to have been incorporated into dwellings subsequently built on the site.

In 1983-84, Canterbury Archaeological Trust recoded elements of the masonry stable range at Staplegate that had been reused in the construction of 1-8 Staplegate Place.
