Full Description

Part of an early Bronze Age, apparently oval shaped enclosure was found during excavations associated with the construction of the east Kent Access route (ZOne 10). The enclosure ditch was up to 25m across and continued to the east within the area of preservation in situ. It was 2m wide and up to 1.1m deep with basal fills that appeared to have washed in – likely deposited in standing water. The upper fills indicate that the feature may have had an external bank. The function and date of the feature is not clear, it is dissimilar from the other ring ditches at the site. A few small sherds of beaker pottery were recovered from either the fills of the features which cut this enclosure, or from the enclosure itself (this was not clear) and a small quantity of cremated human bone suggested the presence of a disturbed cremation burial somewhere in its vicinity. An Early Bronze Age date is suggested but not confirmed. (Information summarised from source) (1)
