Full Description
During archaeological evaluation work, undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, within the grounds of the King's School, St. Augustine's Abbey in 1997-98 the remains of a long extant of stone walling was revealed to the north and east of the Infirmary Chapel and Infirmay complex, which enclosed at least three large areas of land. The wall, constructed of mortared large cut and faced flints, some fragments of architectural stone-work re-used from the demolition of the Abbey buildings and red bricks, was just 30 cms wide and laid on a raft of mortar, clearly laid over post-Dissolution deposits. This wall appears to have been built in c. 1615 forming a narrow boundary wall around the ornamental gardens that were established at this time in the grounds of the former Abbey. The wall is shown on 17th & 18th century prints and may have survived into the late 19th century.
