Full Description

Excavations by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1997-98 located the remains of a flint built building and a brick-built gateway on the northern side of the great Dormitory. No details are known about these structures, nor is their date certain. The structures are shown on a drawing by Daniel King dated 1640; and on a later drawing by John Brent dated 1879 but by then they were somewhat dilapidated, and were subsequently demolished.

Daniel King describes the building next to the gateway as 'part recently of monastery royal chapel, now private apartments'. It is not clear whether the buildings and the gateway, which was enbattled, were of late medieval date with the gateway relating to and providing controlled access to and from the late medieval enclosed Outer Court where the brewhouse & bakehouse and Cellarer's Hall was situated to the North-holmes beyond and later converted when the Royal Palace was established by Henry VIII in 1539-40 (for his future Queen, Anne of Cleves). Or, were actually built during the post Dissolution phase particularly for the Royal Palace. The gateway being built of brick suggests a date no earlier than c. 1490 when brickwork was beginning to be introduced into religious establishments.
