Full Description

Little is know about the cellarer's garden. The garden occupuied the upper part of the precinct, towards St. Martin's Church. The garden was established and walled during the abbacy of Abbot Ralph Bourne (1309-1334) it was certainly before 1330 when records mention it in accounts of an escape from the Abbey via the Cellarer's Garden by a prisoner. It is also known that the outer precincts were walled in the early 14th century. It later formed part of the Ornamental gardens established in the early 17th century. By the late 18th century the gardens were purchsed and the Sessions House and Canterbury Prison were built on the site, completed in 1808.
