Full Description

During the East Kent Access Route excavations (2009-2011) a short element in a Second world War zig-zag defensive ditch was discovered. The trench was not indicated on the plan in the report and so only an approximate position is given. (1)

Trench system visible as crop marks on 2007 and as earthworks 1946. RAF, 1946/7, 1946/47 RAF aerial photograph run (Photograph). Previously recorded as MKE97922 (TR 36 NW 1220). (2)

A trench forming part of a Defence Line of Second World War date was visible as an earthwork (western half) in RAF/HLA/564 V 6029 01-JUN-1942 and as a cropmark (eastern half) in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 21-APR-2007. The eastern half was being infilled by the time the RAF aerial photographs was taken in 1942; the western part was recorded as levelled in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021. It was positioned just outside the perimeter track of RAF Manston. This feature was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (3-5)
