Full Description

Excavations carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1995 immediately south of North Holmes Road within the precincts of Christ Church College, amongst other things revealed a medieval gravel track which was cut by the foundations of a substantial building 11m wide and at least 20m long with internal aisles, possibly a barn. To the south east of this structure was a masonry built kiln/furnace dating, as did the barn, to the late 13th century, probably during the abbacy of Abbot Thomas Fyndon (1283-1309) at a time when land north of the lane to Nordholm (North Holmes Road) was being developed with a new cellarer's range; brewhouse and bakehouse range and a new tile kiln, perhaps the kiln that was discovered by the barn.

"Part of an equestrian roof finial, perhaps originally fixed to a ridge tile, came from Site 16 and suggests that some of the abbey buildings were once adorned with such decorative elements." (3)

6 sherds of Medieval pottery - no further information on context. (3)

The barn and associated features were sealed by post-Dissolution garden loams, though it is possible the barn strcuture survived after this event.

"Between 1983 and 1996 seventeen excavations, evaluations and watching/recording briefs were undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) within the grounds of Canterbury Christ Church University College… In 1996 CAT produced an interim assessment (Hicks 1996) [4] of the potential of the archive at that date. The remit of the document was to assess the quantity, quality and research potential of all the stratigraphic and finds data recovered by that time. It and included a costed recommendation for the post-excavation analysis and publication of the results of the work. Since then the stratigraphic report on the 1995 excavation has been completed (CCC95) and a major excavation (CCC96) undertaken. The aim of this report is to incorporate the results of the more recent work into the 1996 assessment, and to present the revised document to CCCUC and EH for their consideration." (3)
