Full Description

Immediately after the fire of 1145, which destroyed Lanfranc's Church, work began on building a new church, commencing at the east end. The new nave measured c. 23.05m in length E-W, with a total width of 13.80m N-S, this latter measurement including a width of c. 6.00m for the nave body (measured from the edges of the pier base foundations). The nave aisles varied from c. 2.00m - 2.80m from the edge of the pier base foundations to the edge of the flanking walls; the piers however, would have been set in from the edges of these foundations to some extent. The pier base foundations were generally rectangular in plan probably supporting compound piers, the foundations perhaps using part of Lanfranc's foundations in the process.

A doorway led out from the north aisle of the nave into the claustral church complex to the north, a further doorway must have existed in the south wall of the nave, providing access into the graveyard. No details of the floor survived, nor is it certain when the nave was completed, being slightly later than the choir. However, pottery from levelling layers beneath what would have been floor level date to c. 1150-75, suggesting a possible construction date. Documentary evidence shows evidence for a meeting held in the nave in 1181, thus the building must have been completed by this date.

The church was demolished at the Dissolution of c. 1538.
