Full Description
During the late 14th century resonance gullies, 'L'- shaped in plan, were added directly below the choir stalls within Canon's Choir, with their long axes E-W and their returns at the west end to accommodate the seating of the prior and sub-prior. These were designed to accentuate the acoustics in the building, they caused the sounds of the choir to resonate from below the stalls back into the body of the choir.
The resonance gullies were abutted directly against the north and south walls of the choir. They were constructed with narrow outer walls, 0.35-0.40m across, of flint and other stone, surrounding a base of peg tiles. They were probably not much more than about 0.50m in height as they had to fit beneath the choir stalls.
