Full Description
The dormitory forms the part of the eastern range to the east of the great cloister. The dormitory was probably built c. 1150-75 and was certainly known to have been in use by the early 13th century. It was situated at first floor level above an undercroft. At its southern end was the dormitory stairs, dividing the dormitory range from the chapter house to the south. Between the undercroft and stairs lay a small chamber initially described as a passage.
The small chamber, measuring 3m by 6.60m, contained no internal features and its function is unknown. Similar small chambers have been identified elsewhere as inner parlours; simple passageways or even the treasury room. The small size of the chamber here and the lack of any threshold evidence, negates its use as a connecting passage between the great and infirmary cloisters, and on balance it seems that it was probably a small book room, or library.
