Full Description
A circular flint-lined feature lay central to the cloister garth. Not deep enough for a well, the feature appears to have served as a sump for rainwater running off of the corner of the cloister roofs. It was fed by ceramic piping via (later inserted) tile chutes perhaps in the 15th century. Pottery evidence from the sump construction trench attests its creation at the same time as the formation of the cloister garth and claustral quadrangle, sometime in the mid to late 12th century. It appears to have remained in use until the Dissolution.
