Full Description

Forming part of the western range, the pentice was a small subsidiary building attached tio the northern side of the Prior's lodge and the western side of an ancillary building. The structure was approximately 8.20m by 2.10m in plan and, in its first phase, had a large open frontage facing onto the western courtyard and a cobbled floor surface. It was ideally placed for use as a sheltered store with easy access to the precincts and would have almost directly faced the main gate.

The structure may have been used as a minor service building, catering to the general housekeeping needs of the priory and the demands made upon the priory's hospitality. Three of the walls of the pentice were built contemporaneously with those of the Prior's lodge and therefore work probably progressed in conjunction with this structure suggesting a construction date of c. 1175-1225.

Sometime in the mid 13th century, probably at the same time as the construction of the courtyard barn, the building was transformed by the insertion of a new walled frontage containing a conventional doorway. The new wall was clearly not a major supporting structure but may have been a dwarf wall holding a timber framework above, whilst a new clay floor was laid over the former cobbled floor. At the time of the Dissolution, 1538, the pentice was completely dismantled.
