Full Description

The Kitchen/Cellarer's Range was constructed between 1150 and 1200, built within (and also forming) the north-west corner of the kitchen was a large semi-circular oven, 2.60m in diameter, probably used as a bread oven.

During the late 14th to early 15th century the former kitchen/cellarer's range was largely demolished and a new kitchen range built on the same site but to different proportions. During these alterations, the earlier oven was converted into a food washing/preparation area, the curving shall of the oven was retained but a new mortar and part tiled floor was added. With a small drainage chanel just above floor level. Within the north-east corner of this new kitchen range a new second circular bread oven was constructed. Curved in plan the new oven mirrored that of the original oven that had been built into the north-west corner of the earlier kitchen. The new feature was substantial, with an internal diameter of 3m and walls 0.80m thick. An opening 1.80m wide faced into the kitchen.

During the 15th to early 16th century the oven was modified by insertion of an internal division, creating separate chambers to the north and south, suggesting a change or modification of use. It is thought that one possibility is that the oven may have been converted into a smoking chamber. At the Dissolution, in 1538, the kitchen was completely dismantled.
