Full Description
During the mid 13th to 14th century a fenced animal enclosure was added to the north-west side of the kitchen yard, within easy reach of the kitchen, and was approached by a crude timber-lined corridor running in from the kitchen yard also formed at this time. Perhaps to hide the animal pen from general view, a small enclosed yard was thus created adjacent to the kitchen. This was formed by a the construction of a narrow wall leading off at right-angles from the west wall of the kitchen. The kitchen yard enclosed access into the ancillary building and the kitchen. In the latter part of the 14th century, or perhaps the early years of the 15th, the kitchen yard wall either collapsed or was deliberately demolished and subsequently buried by waste demolition material from the kitchen during it's rebuilding programme c. 1350-1450.
