Full Description
The Prior's Lodge, a rectangular shaped building measuring 5.90m by 14.50m, was located in the western range of the Priory. It had a main entrance leading in from the western courtyard and another doorway leading out into the cloister. To the north another small doorway provided access into the ancillary building. In its primary phase, the lodge was divided on the ground floor by a wooden screen set on a low stone wall. The division created a narrow corridor to the west. This would have had the efect of masking the doorway into the cloister from the main entrance and also isolating a stairway leading to the upper floor from the body of the lodge. The south wall of the lodge was originally formed from the north wall of a putative gatehouse providing access from the western courtyard into the inner reaches of the claustral complex. The prior's accommodation appears to have been quite basic, with most of the resources for the necessary entertainment of guests originating from the priory kitchen.
Work on its construction probably began in the mid 12th century c. 1150-75 and was not completed until c. 1250. Throughout the 13th century the ground floor appears to have been a purely domestic area. Modifications to the internal arrangements during the late 13th to mid 14th century suggests that whilst the southern region was retained as a parlour or reception area, the northern was transformed into a store, perhaps holding private supplies for the prior and his guests. The are was revamped in the late 14th or early 15th century when the store may have become a small private dining area.
During the late 14th or early 15th century the southern area of the lodge was extensively rebuilt following the insertion of a large NW tower to the west end of the church. The 12th century structure suvived the Dissolution, and was remodelled as a rented house with an ornamental garden laid behind. By the 1800's it had fallen into disuse and the building shell was used as a store for a clay pipe and pottery kiln located nearby. The building was demolished in c. 1870 when the area was requesitioned by the army.
