Full Description
The Kitchen range foundations were laid out with the rest of the claustral ranges during the mid- late 12th century (c. 1150- 1181) but appears not to have been completed until c. 1250-1275 (such a large time span suggests what was found was a later rebuild!). The kitchen as built had two fireplaces and a central tiled hearth. Of the fireplaces, one was inset into the western wall, and the other, the Eastern Fireplace, was inset into the eastern wall. The Eastern Fireplace was 2.90m long, 0.90m wide and stood to a height of 0.85m. It was constructed upon a bonded flint platform, that was capped by a mortar scree, used as a bedding for the sandstone base of the fireplace. Above the platform, the fireplace was built from coursed green sandstone blocks forming a double skin, curved at its north and south edges.
The whole of the kitchen was demolished at the Dissolution c. 1538.
