Full Description
The Refectory building formed the range on the western side of the cloister. Rectangular shaped in plan it measured approximately 80 feet long N-S by about 24 feet wide E-W with a pulpit, over two storeys, extending out from the middle of the western side serving the first floor friars dining room. Built over two storeys of flint and pudding-stone, with Reigate and Caen stone quoins, it was six bays long with a seventh bay at the north end beyond a stone wall, perhaps added later and confined to the upper floor over a cross-passage leading from the cloister to a bridge over the river. Originally built in the 13th century, c. 1260, with the kitchen block immediately adjacent to the north. The pulpit to the west was also of the same 13th century date. The ground and upper floors were originally lower but due to continual flooding they were raised at a later date. The original first floor was of timber, whilst at ground level it was built as an undercroft. Further additions were made in the 16th century and later with the insertion of fireplaces and new windows.
