Full Description

The Cloister formed the centre point of the Friary. Square shaped in plan it measured approximately 80 feet square, with a walkway on all four sides approximately 8 feet wide, around a central garth, or garden, about 64 feet square. To the north-west corner was a passageway leading to a bridge over the river and then onto the gateway. It isd likely that a lavatorium was situated somewhere near to the entrance to the refectory, where the friars could wash their hands before meals; other doorways would have led off of the cloister walk to the various ranges and the church. Built at the time the main friary buildings were constructed, between c. 1237 and 1260. It was lost at the Dissolution of 1538.
