Full Description

The church, believed to have been dedicated to St. Edward the Confessor, was the first permament building to be completed in the Blackfriars monastic complex.

The drawing, by Thomas Langdon dated 1595, showed the church and unusually it was a long rectangular structure, with no transepts; side chapels, or tower. The Church building measured approximately 146 feet in length E-W by about 34 feet in width N-S. It consisted of a western nave measuring about 80 feet long E-W internally by about 28 feet wide N-S with a long eastern choir and chancel approximately 58 feet long internally E-W by about 28 feet wide. A porch was placed on the south wall close to the south-west corner of the building beyond which was a walled walkway alongside the churchyard leading to an eastern gateway. At least two doorways, for the friars use, were situated in the northern wall. One allowing access from the refectory end of the cloister into the west end of the nave; and the second was placed where the nave and choir met, providing access from the chapter house and dormitory range via the cloister's eastern walkway. The church was dismantled after the Dissolution in c. 1560.
