Full Description
Reredorter, or Friar's Latrine Block. This was situated immediately to the north-west of the friar's dorter (dormitory block) and unusually north of the kitchen. Rectangular shaped in plan it, measuring approximately 70 feet long E-W by about 27 feet wide N-S, it was built over an undercroft and extended out over the river, the latrines probably positioned above the river, presumably using the river flow to wash away the effluent. Built between c. 1236 and 1260, it no doubt, as is usually the arrangements in monastic establishments, had direct through connections with the dormitory block at first floor level.
