Full Description
Land was given to the Fransican Friars by Alderman John Digges in 1267 to the north of Binnewith Island so that they could enlarge their friary. Apart from a series of conventual buildings erected here at this time; a new church was also erected and dedicated to St. Francis. At the east end of the church was a chancel, with perhaps a choir to the west separting the nave from the chancel. The Nave at the west end of the church is approximately 118 feet in length E-W by about 34 feet wide N-S. To the east between the chancel end and the nave was a walking space, or passage way which led from the Greyfriars passage at St. Peter's Street to the church. The church went soon after Dissolution of 1538. A further range or building is known to have run southwards from the west end of the nave, but at present its function is uncertain, however, in monastic layouts generally this would most likely be part of the great cloister.
