Full Description
The Dominican Friary was founded in c. 1236. The precinct boundaries are bordered by St. Peter's Lane to the west; Mill Lane to the north; King Street to the east; and the Friars to the south. There may have been entrances to the complex via St. Peter's Street to the south-west and perhaps from St. Peter's Lane to the west. The Great stour River runs N-S through the centre of the precincts. The precincts covered an area of about 1.831 hectares. The friary was suppressed at the Dissolution in 1538. It seems possible that a curving dyke had been excavated running off of and then back to the River Stour to form a boundary to the monastery; or alternatively it could have been a natural brak in the river that formed an early island somewhat similar to that of Binnewith to the south-west.
